OPEN MIC: every second Tuesday starting at 6pm (winter schedule)
Facilitated by Dr. Brent T Downes, Award winning community development practitioner, published author and performer from Australia.
Every second Tuesday finds an enthusiastic and growing crowd in Kathmandu, supporting the Open Mic sessions which transform Nexus Cafe’s courtyard into a welcoming space for performers young, and young at heart.
Along with local artists, workers and volunteers from Nepal and abroad sharing both their own work and that of contemporary and classical artists, a cross-cultural approach to poetry has been the mainstay of the approach to these happy events.
Interestingly, many come to flex their performance wings for the first-time and finding it not the traumatic experience they feared, return again and again as their confidence and self-esteem are nurtured in this supportive, informal community.
Nepali, Hindi and English are the linguistic mainstays, with styles and origins ranging from Nepali feminism to Australian bush ballads, rapid-fire hip-hop to slow Sufi classics, tales of the joy and challenges of surviving and thriving in Kathmandu, and the greater beauty that is both Nepal and all the places we call home.
Recently, Nexus has seen not only an increase in a capella and accompanied musical performance, but also stand-up comedy.
Performers are welcome to sign up on the night and join the pleasure of being among this happy group, united by a love of thoughtful words, conceived, crafted and curated with joy.
Sessions are run on a round robin format. See the video sneak-preview
